On Monday Papa and I went to the Cyrus McCormick Farm. It is only about 20 miles from here and it is the place where the reaper was invented. That instrument changed how fast farmers could harvest their grains and it opened up the way for bigger, more producing farms. It was very fascinating to see not only the blacksmith shop and models of the reaper but also a working mill.
We took a lovely walk along a nature trail and saw a real "Honeybee tree". It was full of bees!
We saw beautiful berries and even a blue heron on the lake that feeds the mill.
Now the sad part. The night before we came an airplane had crashed on the property killing 4 people(the pilot was the former CEO of Checkers Restaurants). The plane fell from 32000 feet and plowed nose first into the ground. We couldn't see the site but we were there when the press had a briefing from the National Aeronautic safety board. It was interesting to watch the press and to hear the news straight from the officials.
It was an interesting afternoon on a beautiful (and humid free!) day.
